A History of Luxury at Seneca Lake
This Carpenter Gothic Victorian style Manor, located in the hamlet of Caywood (Lodi, NY) was built in 1885 by brothers James and Charles Caywood.
The Caywoods made their fortunes in Gold Mining and the Lumber business. In fact, they transported the lumber to build this home by barge, from the Midwest, down and through the blustery winds of Seneca Lake. James lived here from 1885-1905, and was cared for by E.G. Porter and his wife Celia. Thereafter, E.G. grew the business by leaps and bounds. He brought the railroad through here and made a fortune in the commodities market, ensuring great success. Some of that fortune was added to the grandeur of their home by his son E.J. when he built the E.J. Porter Hall - with its magnificent views of Seneca Lake.
In 2004, The Pellegrini family, lived out a life long dream of collecting antiques and searching for a grand old house to restore and turned the Porter-Caywood house into a Bed & Breakfast. They completely restored its splendor and opened it to the public in March, 2005. Some of their guests sometime hear doors opening and closing on their own.
Come and see for yourself. There is a lot more history about their home, Caywood, Lodi, Seneca Lake, and the people that make up this small town.
